Norma Michel
Born in Northern Baja California, she began her painting career at the age of 14 with art studies under the direction of Carlos Castro in Tijuana. In addition to numerous exhibitions in Mexico, her paintings have been shown in Washington, D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Her work is highly respected by other artists for its dreamlike use of color and sophisticated acrylic techniques. She has been featured in several magazines and most recently, Norma's work appeared in the fall 1999 issue of Shaman's Drum, where her paintings were described as "Castanedian metaphysical themes...honoring the spiritual icons and motifs of Mexican curanderismo."
Artist Statement My desire is to have a dialogue with the painting and to understand its language. Through this understanding, I communicate emotions revealed to me in the creation process. These emotions express themselves in color and in forms and open a new path for ideas that are merely thoughts of a reality altered by imagination.
My work tends to provoke interest in a new appreciation of living moments, of memories and of life itself. This is where form and space relate to each other and interact - and are able to merge and become one. |
