Eugenio Carmi

Born in Genova, Italy in 1920. He lives and works in Milan.

Carmi studied in Turin under the direction of painter Felice Casorati and applied himself to graphic art for a long period of time. His participation in the Venice Biennale in 1966 is considered one of the most significant stages of his artistic career. Since then, he has produced a number of experimental creations, such as the electronic works that were on show at the "Superlund" exhibition (1967) curated by Pierre Restany at Lund (Sweden), or the "Carm-omatic" at the "Cybernetic Serendipity" exhibition in London (1968). He created experimental programmes for RAI (Italian broadcasting corporation). He also held seminars on the visual arts at the Rhode Island Institute of Design at Providence (United States). He taught at the Accademie di Belle Arti (art schools) of Macerata and Ravenna. His illustrations for a book of fairy tales by Umberto Eco are also well known; these have been published in three volumes in Italy and abroad. Before participating in the 13th Rome Quadriennale, "Proiezioni 2000", he exhibited his works in Milan (1990), Budapest (1992), Luxembourg (1997, during Luxemburg's presidency of the European Union), Hamburg (1998), Barcelona and Los Angeles (1999).

"…his painting in prose shuns at the essential in the relations between color and form. For forty years, Carmi has been emitting single, geometric or geometrizan signs carrying vivid colors. With these signal-signs, Carmi makes anything from paintings to luminous discs or tapestries. Everything happens as if Carmi had wanted right from the beginning to give the utmost autonomy to the elements of his visual idioms, to arrange them in a plain and essential vocabulary…"
