 Represented Artists Back
Willi Gutmann
Born in Dielsdorf, Switzerland, in 1927, sculptor Willi Gutmann has participated in more than 160 one-man and group exhibitions throughout Europe, the United States, Mexico and Japan. Gutmann's career began in architecture and design, but his main focus since 1965 has been sculpture. He works in a multitude of media including aluminum, steel, brass and wood. His works are often precisely designed to slide open and reform into different shapes. His largest steel sculpture, which is 84 feet tall, is on display at the Embarcadero Centre in San Francisco. By contrast, his smallest sculpture is a cube of brass cut into three sections less than half an inch tall.
"The defining element of my work is that you can open it and close it," explains Gutmann. "You are small, you grow, you develop, you retreat, you shrink smaller and smaller, you return to earth. Expansion and contraction is, I think, the crystallized idea behind my work."
