Ante Marinovic
Born in 1947 in Vela Luka, on the island of Korcula in Croatia. Residing in San Diego, California since 1993.
"ISOLA" (Island), this is the title that Ante Marinovic gave this exhibition. ORIGIN of all, are the Mediterranean Memories… The genesis of his work and the inspiration to create his sculptures, is the Island of Korkula.
The main key of interpretation of Ante Marinovic's work, we can see in his referential obstinate memories of attachment to the native territory, Korkula. From this Dalmatian, beautiful, peaceful island on the Mediterranean Sea (Roman since 221 before Jesus Christ, Venetian for centuries - where Marco Polo was born - before passing under Austrian domination in 1814, to return to Italy in 1919, surrendered to Yugoslavia in 1947, and part of Croatia on the last decade), comes the inspiration that influences the creation of all his sculptures.
Sculptures of marble, granite, stone, bronze, wood, steel, dressed, smooth, meticulously shaped. Even though they have abstract shapes averse to one precise figure, they are full of life, talking and inspiring memories, sentiments, emotions…
The visual repertoire of Ante, filtered by the impression, makes up a reflex conditioned by all this ancestral reminiscences, an original mark of sensitiveness. The truth of the man is in his roots!
